Abstract

This chapter examines the role of rulers, and ruling families, at the center of power dynamics in the Gulf States, utilizing historical as well as contemporary examples to illustrate how power and authority are accrued and wielded. No two ruling families in the Gulf States are alike and the chapter examines key points of difference that make each family distinct. The nature of political authority in tribal societies has differed from Western constructs, such as those put forward by Max Weber, and the chapter provides region-specific examples to illustrate both the underlying nature of political authority and how it has evolved over time. The chapter ends by examining the tools of control that have enabled ruling families to maintain and consolidate political power in the face of rapid socioeconomic change.
