forecast. >> yeah, you know, we're going to see some drier air move on in thanks to some northerly winds that will, in fact lower the relative humidity, increase fire danger around the bay area. the next several days, all due to a system offshore there. right now it is 53 in fremont, 57 in oakland, and up in the north bay. we've got clear sky, 47 santa rosa, our 24 hour temperature change. we are warmer. all of that wind has mixing the atmosphere. so anywhere from a degree to about seven degrees milder this morning. but look at the wind gusts. sfo 36 miles an hour, 22 in the city. and then we go up and hide. and mount diablo is 42 to 46 mile an hour wind gusts. so we'll be breezy to gusty throughout the day. sunny skies all around the bay. and then we'll look for not only the winds, but them to ramp up to near 50 miles an hour at the shoreline. so we're slightly cooler today. we're dry. we'll talk about how long this drier than normal weather lasts in a couple of minutes. stephanie. >> all right. lisa. thank you. a confrontation at an east bay shopping center has left a

security guard dead. this happened late last night at the cvs located at the fremont hub. it's a very busy shopping center. there was some sort of argument between the guard and another person, and it spiraled from there. here's abc seven news reporter lauren martinez. police really haven't released many details around the shooting. i can tell you this is a very busy shopping center. people have been coming here all day leaving candles and flowers. >> fremont hub and advising that a subject was shot. there is a security guard that's down the investigation into what led to a deadly confrontation at this cvs in fremont is underway. >> police say around 11 thursday night, an altercation between a security guard and another individual quickly turned violent. >> and it looks like we have several employees barricaded in the pharmacy. >> the security guard was shot and killed. the other individual had several stab wounds on friday, those in the

neighborhood left flowers for the security guard, who has not been publicly identified. >> i don't have a way to reach the family or anything, but it it just felt like a good thing to do. >> one woman leaving flowers said she works as security at a store nearby. >> i'm actually work here at the hub at michael's, so we're. security has been a really big issue for the hub. we have people stealing all the time, but as employees, we know we're not allowed to do anything about it physically. >> cvs was closed friday with a note posted on it telling customers where they could pick up their medications. >> i just had surgery today and i need my prescription, so now i've got to figure out where to go. >> cvs released this statement. we are cooperating with police in their investigation of an incident that occurred at our store on fremont hub. we are not able to confirm any details at this time. >> it's appalling. and it's, it's horrific. >> residents describe the area as generally safe, but feel like

petty crime has gone up low level crime has always been an issue, part of the reason they had security but never thought something like this would happen. >> fremont police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has more information to contact them. >> my thoughts are with his family. it's unfortunate that people are walking around with guns, and they feel they need to take it to that level. >> the person who was stabbed was taken to a local trauma hospital in fremont. lauren martinez abc seven news. now this, five people were arrested in connection with this shocking smash and grab at a sunnyvale jewelry store. it happened on wednesday. 20 people broke into png jewelers. they smashed nearly every display case in just 2.5 minutes. police pursued one of the vehicles that got away and caught all suspects inside. despite their attempt to ditch the car and flee on foot, the value of all that was stolen is unknown. some of the jewelry,

though, has been recovered and an investigation is ongoing. the bart board of directors passed a new budget for the next two fiscal years yesterday, but not everyone on the board supported it, in part because the transit agency is forecast to face a budget deficit as high as 300 to $400 million over the coming years. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been following this story for us, and explains how it could impact you at home with a vote of 9 to 2, the bart board of directors passed their new budget for the next two years, the move coming ahead of an expected fiscal cliff since the pandemic. >> the transit agency has largely relied on federal and state money to keep it afloat, but that money is expected to run out around april 2026, and bart is facing the prospect of annual deficits between 300 and $400 million. >> we have a crisis on our hands. >> deborah allen is a bart board director and one of the two members to vote against the budget on thursday. allen

believes the board should start planning now for the possible fiscal cliff and trim the agency's current spending as much as they can. >> we've got to have a plan b right and there still isn't one. >> not everyone shares allen's viewpoint, though. bevan dufty is the bart board president. he says he's proud of the budget the board passed thursday. >> we've been tightening our belt for a while now. you know, the past couple of years we've balanced our budget through state and federal support, dufty says he worries if bart starts cutting services now, it could create a so-called death spiral and harm the agency even more. >> in the long run. he tells me. the bart board has been working closely with state and federal lawmakers ahead of the impending fiscal cliff. dufty says he supports efforts by people like state senator scott wiener, who wants to fund the transit agency through increased taxes and fees. wiener hopes to put a ballot measure before voters in 2026. >> they recognize that if we start willy nilly cutting things , furloughing people, laying people off, that that is really going to deeply impact our

ability to draw people back into the system. >> dufty says. bart's biggest problem remains its lack of ridership. as of may, it's only at 43% of pre-pandemic levels, a number impacted by the rise of remote and hybrid work following covid. and while dufty hopes more people will return to the office full time, allen thinks that's just not realistic. >> no one predicts that is going to happen. all predictions are that there will be just really nominal amounts of growth over time. >> even if voters were to approve a new tax measure, funding likely wouldn't come until 2028. in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news on the other hand, there's a significant step to bring bart to silicon valley. >> this extension will add four stations and wrap around through downtown san jose and end near the airport. most of it will be underground. the extension is a partnership between bart and the valley transportation authority. vta will own the facilities,

while bart will operate and maintain them. it's expected to cost $13 billion and finally be completed in 2037. the supreme court ruling striking down the trump era ban on bump stocks will not impact california's law against them. that's according to attorney general rob bonta, the high court's conservative majority ruled that the gun accessory does not turn a rifle into a machine gun. people who use bump stocks with semiautomatic weapons can fire rapidly compared to using a machine gun. a gunman used a bump stock when he killed 60 people at a las vegas music festival back in 2017, the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. all right. to a live look outside now in the san francisco bay oakland international airport, where a flight that landed here last month is under investigation. both ang and federal agencies are trying to determine why a southwest airlines flight experienced a rare and dangerous

event called a dutch roll. that's when the plane moves back and forth, and the nose of the aircraft makes a figure eight. it happened during a flight from phoenix to oakland on may 25th. the plane was damaged, but the crew maintained control and landed safely. thankfully, no one was hurt. now to the latest in the state trial for david depape, the man who's already been federally convicted in the attack on paul pelosi yesterday, the 44 year old's defense team rested their case with no testimony from the defendant. the judge told the jury he wasn't ready to give them instructions yet and sent them home for the weekend. jurors are expected to receive their instructions monday, followed by closing arguments before they begin deliberations. closing argument, that is, depape is already facing 30 years in prison from his federal criminal trial. if convicted in the state trial, the judge will determine if his sentence will be served consecutively or concurrent. all right. let's check in with lisa. how's it looking outside? well

the south bay. it's intended to help planners better understand what visitors love about coyote valley. open space categories include wildlife, plants and landscapes. the contest is called picturing coyote valley, and it runs until july 22nd. it's open to professional and amateur photographers. all right, let's check in with lisa to on what to expect weather wise this weekend. any more triple digit heat in the coming week? >> you know, it looks like we're going to get warm towards the end of the seven day outlook. okay. yeah. but between now and then we've got some cooler weather and some high fire danger to talk about. so we are looking at that wind shift that has allowed for gusty winds and the relative humidity will be dropping day after day, and that has set up some of the areas around us under a red flag warning. here's a look at live doppler seven. so we're clear. we've had so much wind and mixing of the atmosphere that there's not too much left of the marine layer. it's there's some out there. we have fog around half moon bay. you can kind of

see a little bit in the distance there, but otherwise we're talking about those winds throughout the next several days right on through maybe early tuesday. it is 52 right now in san francisco, 57 in oakland and hayward. look at that. 58 in redwood city. and you can see the clear view from our sutro tower camera 47, santa rosa, 46, in petaluma. so we're going to get into not only the breezy to gusty winds, but the temperatures will be dropping off a little bit. and the coast well we're going to see winds that could ramp up to near 50 miles an hour. the only advisories we have are around the bay area. but you'll see in the next few minutes how dry things are going to get. so sunny, mild to warm over the weekend. and then tonight those winds really ramp up and that's when we get into the red flag warning to the north and east of us. and then that elevated fire danger will be with us for the next several days. so here's where we're looking at the red flag warning from 11:00 tonight through 8:00 on sunday. clear lake, hidden valley lake, down through vacaville. humidity from 10 to 20. so if we look at our

fire danger index and we go through the afternoon today, you'll notice the yellows indicate those areas that will be most dry. then we go back tonight and the relative humidity increases and this is a look at sunday. so we're in the moderate to high category here mainly above 2000ft. and if we look at the humidity today in the afternoon you can see 45% san francisco. but look at the 16% there. concord 32% in oakland. that's pretty dry. and then into sunday gets even drier, 14% in napa, 15% santa rosa down through san jose. and then a look at monday. we're still looking at that relative humidity, even less in the single digits there. so pretty critical conditions. although the winds they're going to make for the gusty conditions right here. and as we go through the afternoon notice 30 to 40 miles an hour while inside the bay, we're up to about 20, 25 miles an hour. and then into sunday. this is probably the windiest day out there. so today we're going to call for just upper

a chinese cantonese speaking older female and once they approach this single elderly, either waiting in the bus stop or walking around by by herself. then they started to talk to them. uh- very trained scammers who could talk up to the seniors about they need blessing because they don't look too well. >> this attorney represents the victims of a $39 million ponzi scheme that targeted residents of chinatown. >> it targeted a monolingual chinese community. in this case, it was someone they trusted and knew for over 30 years. >> have you ever had anyone try and scam you? >> some by phone and some by email? camilla says scammers have tried to contact her asking for her address or social security number. >> i always hang up. i don't want to say anything. >> authorities say it's important to report these scams and fraudulent crimes so that law enforcement can follow up, and so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. >> we know that these crimes are underreported. so if we don't

>> weather experts predict more severe wind gusts, flooding and downpours to hit the region again. back here in the bay area, we continue to follow the story of that controversial center bike lane on san francisco's valencia street. there's now a new option to change the bike lane that would lead to a twisting path for bikers, according to the chronicle. sfmta is now planning to let each merchant decide which of the two options they like for the side running lane. the first option would allow business owners with a parklet could keep it next to the sidewalk, and that bikers would go around the parklet and towards car traffic. the other option would allow businesses to push the parklet out into an island. now the bike lane would run between the parklet and the curb. cyclists would be responsible for watching out for pedestrians, merchants have been blaming the change as hurting business since it eliminated 70 parking spaces. abc seven spoke

with a business owner who's run a coffee shop on valencia for 33 years. >> financially, definitely. we're hurting and we had the place up for sale about eight three months ago. >> best option for both safety and to support the local merchants is likely side running design. >> sfmta will present its proposals to the board of directors on tuesday. the group that runs the oakland coliseum is crunching the numbers as it prepares to say goodbye to the a's and hello to some new tenants at the stadium. the coliseum authority held a special meeting yesterday to discuss budget matters. they continue negotiations with the oakland roots and soul soccer clubs, which are set to play their home matches at the coliseum next year. now the deal includes several blockout dates during the soccer season, which the authority is working to fill with concerts and other events. >> we've been reached out to by some football teams and others, and so when we talk about being able to serve, you know, sodas

and hot dogs and whatever in the building, it wouldn't end up only being for roofs and sold. it was that there are some other events. we are also working on as well. >> the meeting comes just days after the city's sale of its 50% stake in the coliseum complex was approved. happening today, the annual fireworks buyback is taking place in the south bay san mateo county sheriff's office will hold three back buyback events. that is throughout june. fireworks are currently illegal in san mateo county, except in san bruno and pacifica. authorities say people can turn them in anonymously without question. it's an effort made by the county to get the banned explosives out of the public's hands and prevent any incidents from happening on the 4th of july. >> i've worked at a number of the stations in the county and up on skyline boulevard. in particular. we'd respond to 3 or 4 fires a year from people setting off bottle rockets, roman candles, things like that.

>> the sheriff's office says last year's firework buyback events were a resounding success, and they collected 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives. the international bird rescue, released over 20 healthy brown pelicans into the wild. the birds were rescued last month, found starving and barely alive after being fed plenty of fish, they were released into the bay off sausalito yesterday. as you see here, bird rescuers are still looking into why so many pelicans are starving, but they believe it may be related to climate change. >> we've got issues of warming water, fish not being available where they normally were. there's a number of theories being bounced around, but it really is about the pelicans being able to access the food. >> there are about 120 pelicans still in rehab. directors of the international bird rescue say fewer birds are being admitted, an encouraging sign that the starvation event is waning. still ahead this morning, if you're looking for something to

5:00 right here on abc seven. all right, let's check in with lisa. how's it looking outside? >> well, you know, it's windy. the winds have picked up overnight and it's going to stay windy in spots at times throughout the next several days. so we have a system that is influencing us that's dropping down to the south and west of us. that is providing a wind shift as we look out live right now towards santa cruz, we are not only in the upper 40s chilly, but we'll get to the low 70s today with winds at about 20 miles an hour. but further up the road we'll see winds to 40 miles an hour. 52, san francisco 57, in oakland, hayward, san jose. and there's a little fog. half moon bay. gorgeous view here. you can see how things have cleared out. we've had so much wind throughout the overnight hours in the upper elevations that's kept us a little bit milder. and finally, the camera from 8-k this morning where things are nice and clear and pretty quiet to start out. so sunny, mild to warm this weekend for father's day. but we are looking at not only the relative humidity dropping but

the winds with that allowing for the offshore flow to bring us down to some critical levels the next several days, right on through monday, possibly tuesday , and a red flag warning to the north and east of us. so this is where things are really going to get dry. 10 to 20% through tomorrow night with north winds that could gust to 35 miles an hour for lake county around solano county and up through the sacramento valley. but if we zoom into the bay area, our fire danger index does a pretty good job of showing the moderate to high risk of fire danger. and this is where we are in the upper elevations from ben loman there up through healdsburg to the north bay. and then as we get through the overnight hours, we won't have that fog, but we'll certainly have the cooler temperatures and a return to higher relative humidity. but look what happens for father's day. we really dry out, and the grasses are extremely dry. any wind that really is blowing for a certain period of time will continue to dry things out. and you don't want to be that one

spark that really creates that fire start. here's a look at the relative humidity throughout the day today. this is noontime. it's already pretty low. anywhere from 20 to 30% in our inland valleys. you see san francisco at 57, 71, half moon bay. but as we go through 4:00, we've dropped off to about 18% in livermore, 13% in santa rosa. so you do get the idea of how dry things get throughout the weekend. so here's a look at the winds. you'll notice that they're pretty quiet now, except at the airport throughout the afternoon. they'll ramp up to 20 miles an hour. and then there's a look at the coast, how gusty it is into your sunday morning. it's breezy, and then it's even windier as we get winds near 50 miles an hour. point race for today, then look for temperatures from the 60s at the coastline to the upper 60s downtown. very windy conditions there. mid 70s richmond to the upper 70s. there for you in san rafael, looking at 86, in santa rosa, morgan hill 82 the
